RHINOCEROS to share its latest battery recycling results at Battery Innovation Days 2026
06/11/2026
From automated battery dismantling to black mass processing and battery materials recovery, RHINOCEROS has been making progress across several stages of the recycling process. On 11 November, the project will bring its latest technical developments to Battery Innovation Days 2026, taking place in Stockholm, Sweden, and online.
Álvaro Manjón Fernández, from TECNALIA Research & Innovation and coordinator of RHINOCEROS, will participate in the plenary session “Which Place for Mining, Refining, and Recycling in the Circular Life of Batteries?”, scheduled for 11:30–12:30.
Laboratory trials have validated robotic dismantling operations, while the combination of mechanical pre-treatment and supercritical CO₂ extraction has demonstrated promising results for recovering electrolyte components and binders. The project has also advanced its metal recovery processes, achieving leaching efficiencies above 95% for nickel, cobalt and manganese in solvometallurgical experiments. These developments, together with ongoing work on graphite recovery and the validation of recycled materials in new battery electrodes, will form part of the project’s contribution to the session.
Álvaro will participate on behalf of the Cluster Hub “Materials for Batteries from European Resources”, a collaborative initiative connecting EU-funded projects working on battery raw materials, processing, refining and recycling.
The presentation will also feature contributions from LiCORNE, GR4FITE3, CICERO, LITHOS, EXCEED and INERRANT, offering a broader view of the technologies being developed across the European battery materials value chain.
