Main tasks and responsibilities in the project:
In RHINOCEROS, Sapienza will lead the development of a process for the electrochemical recovery of lithium from the black mass of Li-ion batteries (sub-task 5.1.1) and the direct synthesis of high-performance electrode materials from the residual solid fraction (Task 5.2). The process will allow directly producing new generation electrode materials (lithium-manganese rich cathode materials and graphene) by excluding the complex and costly separation of the different elements that is currently performed by state-of-the-art recycling processes. Sapienza will perform lab-scale optimization and will cooperate with the other RHINOCEROS partners to scale up the proposed process solution (WP6) and demonstrate its sustainability (WP8).
